X-Men: Days of Future Past Seemingly Confirmed as a Soft Reboot

Fans who have speculated that the time-travel antics in X-Men: Days of Future Past, coupled with repeated assurances by producers that they're fixing some of the mistakes of the original X-Men trilogy, means that the film will reboot the turn-of-the-century era films starring Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen, appear to be more or less on target, according to a new conversation with the film's writer and producer, Simon Kinberg. "Part of what happens with Days of Future Past is that we reset certain elements of the future so that even [X-Men, X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand] sort of...can be reinterpreted," Kinberg told IGN (video embedded below). That seemingly opens the door to Wolverine's inclusion in X-Men: Apocalypse if the filmmakers so choose, since a reinvented past and present populated by a version of Logan who has already worked with Xavier and his followers once in the '70s means that his joining the team in the '80s would no longer conflict with his first meeting with the team in X-Men. It could also open the door to resurrections or, arguably better than that, a new reality where certain characters simply never died. X-Men: Days of Future Past hits U.S. theaters on May 23.
