The only thing that can beat a Marvel movie at the box office is another Marvel movie. At least, that appears to be the story so far this year at the worldwide box office. Since mid-April, Captain America: The Winter Soldier has held the title of the highest grossing movie of 2014 so far at the worldwide box office.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was the first film to even get close to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, holding the second position at the worldwide box office for a large part of May and June. But now, X-Men: Days of Future Past has whizzed by both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to claim the top position at the worldwide box office.

After this weekend's box office, X-Men: Days of Future Past became the highest grossing movie of the year so far with a total take of $712.7 million. Captain America: The Winter Solider has fallen into second place with a total take of $711.2 million, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is now third with a total take of $703.7 million.

X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are the only three movies to cross the $700 million mark at the worldwide box office year to date. However, it's likely that Transformers: Age of Extinction will eventually join them in the $700 million club, after taking in $301.3 million at the worldwide box office during its opening weekend.
