Jennifer Lawrence Reveals Why She Returned For 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix'

Actress Jennifer Lawrence joined the Marvel universe back in 2010 when she portrayed Mystique in X-Men: First Class. A budding young talent at the time, the actress has since been nominated for a variety of different awards and even took home the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2013. Despite becoming one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation, Lawrence will return to the world of Marvel with a role in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, due to an informal agreement she made with her good friend, director Simon Kinberg.

"I kind of f*cked myself," Lawrence joked. "Because when I was trying to talk Simon into directing, he said something like, 'If I direct it, you have to do it,' and I was like, 'Of course! Duh!' Then they offered me the movie, and I was like, 'Goddammit!'"

This wasn't the only reason she accepted the role, having grown to love and embrace the characters' passionate fans over the years.

"It was the fan base, though, too — the other reason was for the fans," she pointed out.

The last film in the franchise, X-Men: Apocalypse, created doubts about the series' future, being the worst reviewed installment in the proper X-Men franchise. Dark Phoenix hopes to correct the series' course, with Lawrence confirming how positive her experience was while making it.

"Acting-wise it was the best experience I've had [on these films]," Lawrence confessed. "He's been writing these characters for so long and he knows them so deeply. I suddenly felt more connected to my character than I ever have been before."

"It was unrecognizable," Lawrence added of the day-to-day experience. "Everything was on time. Everything was organized. These movies have always been fun amidst chaos, and now they were fun with no chaos."

The biggest complaint the actress has about the role is that, due to portraying a character with blue skin, the role requires her to shoot almost completely nude and covered in paint.

"I love these movies — it's just the paint," the actress explained on the set of Apocalypse in 2015. "I was 20 [when she starred in First Class] and I didn't care about fumes and toxins, and now I'm almost 25 and I'm like, 'I can't even pronounce this and that's going in my nose? I'm breathing that?'"

X-Men: Dark Phoenix lands in theaters November 2, 2018.
