Earlier today, Marvel Studios rocked the comic book movie release schedule when they announced Ant-Man and the Wasp, moved the release dates of Black Panther and Captain Marvel, and claimed three dates in 2020 for the beginning of phase four.

Those three dates are just that. We know Marvel Studios films are coming but we don’t know for sure which characters will be featured. Let’s take a look at the possibilities.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3
A Guardians of the Galaxy movie will be three years due, following its Vol. 2 predecessorย which came thr
ee years after the first.
The first weekend in May is reserved for Marvel’sย biggest films, for example, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Civil War, Infinity War, and Guardians:ย Vol. 2, all have first weekend in May release dates.
By 2020, Guardians will likely be Marvel’sย biggest non-Avengers property, except for one option…
Iron Man 4
ย
Iron Man is easily Marvel’sย biggest attraction outside of Avengers films.
If Robert Downeyย Jr. signs on to play Iron Man, even one more time in an encore type rolem following Infinity War, the Iron Man franchise will see its first solo film in 7 years. If that’s not worthy of Marvel’sย precious and dominant May weekend.
Spider-Man 2
ย
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man debuts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe this May in Captain America: Civil War and will then have his own standalone film in July of 2017. By 2020, he’ll be due for a sequel.
Though plot details are anybody’sย guess for the first Spider-Man film, let alone the second, Spider-Man has one of the richest comic book histories in terms of story-telling, so Marvel Studios would have no problem cranking out another Peter Parker saga three years after his standalone premiere.
Solo Hulk Movie
ย
Uponย joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2012, Ruffaloย signed on for six films. Let’s run through the films in which he has appeared so far:
- The Avengers
- Iron Man 3
- Avengers: Age of Ultron
He won’t be making an appearance in Captain America: Civil War and a Bruce Banner cameo in Doctor Strange would seem a bit strange, especially since none of us know where Hulk jetted off to after saving Sokovia. Assuming he appears in both Infinity War films, Ruffaloย will still have at least one more Marvel Studios film on his contract by 2020. Planet Hulk, anybody?
She-Hulk
ย
If not a Hulk solo film, perhaps we can see Bruce Banner and Jennifer Walters team-up and “The Hulks,” where She-Hulk is introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Perhapsย Jennifer was injured by Ultron’sย tactics or Thanos’ eventual arrival to Earth, Banner lends her some blood, and the aftermath is her mutation into She-Hulk. Beyond a cameo to create the female hero, a She-Hulk movie can be a success, with or without Bruce Banner.
Netflix Character(s)
ย
With the Netflix characters gaining popularity in the off-season, they’ll only see more success when Jessica Jones airs its first season, followed by the largely anticipating Daredevil season 2 featuring Jon Bernthalย as the Punisher.
The plan is to have a Defenders series on Netflix, linking all the characters of Hell’s Kitchen together to stop a threat of some sort, but what if the Defenders becomes a movie or just one of the characters see the big screen?
Daredevil and the Punisherย would appear to be the most likely bets (probably because they’re the only ones we know anything about at this point), but realistically, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s movies are drastically different in style, tone, and characters when compared the characters being showcased on Netflix. The characters likely won’t see a standalone big screen debut any time soon.
Wouldn’t we rather see a Moon Knight movie, anyway?
Hawkeye And/Or Black Widow
ย
Hawkeyeย and Black Widow both saw some growth as characters in Avengers: Age of Ultron.ย
We’re still hoping to see what Budapest was like from both of their perspectives, so maybe we get a prequel film about the two teaming up? Perhaps a film in the current time line featuring flashbacks?
It doesn’t hurt that Marvel is pushing female heroes to the forefront, with The Wasp being the first female heroin to be named in a movie’s title, followed by Captain Marvel. A Black Widow/Hawkeyeย espionage film would only help keep this trend alive.
Doctor Strange 2
ย
Doctor Strange will likely be a huge success following the rave reviews of simple concept art from D23 and Benedict Cumberbatch’sย involvement.
Should the Doctor be a success in his debut next year, Marvel Studios will undoubtedly prescribe a sequel and 2020 will be 4 years from his first appearance.
Nova
ย
Be it Sam Alexander or Richard Rider, we desperately want to see Nova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The character was originally part of the first Guardians of the Galaxy’s script but was ultimately cut from the final product. Instead, the Nova Corps was a focal point of the cosmic adventure. Nova is out there somewhere, so let’s get him introduced in Infinity War and then on the big screen as a titular hero.
New Avengers
ย
We’ve heard several times that the Avengers line-up will be frequently changing.
By the end of Age of Ultron, it seemed we had our New Avengers team of Captain America, The Vision, Scarlet Witch, War Machine, The Falcon and Black Widow, but with new characters such as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and hopefully Nova joining the fold, a New Avengers line-up seems more plausible than ever by 2020.
The bestย argument against a New Avengers film is the fact that Marvel Studios would be following up two straight years of Avengers films with Infinity War Parts I and II with a third consecutive Avengers titled movie. New Avengers may have to wait.
