Uncharted Movie Removed From Sony's Release Schedule

The anticipated big-screen adaptation of the hit video game Uncharted has been removed from Sony's movie release schedule and has not yet been rescheduled.

The story centers on a legendary treasure hunter, who learns the location of the fabled lost city of El Dorado, but has to compete with a rival to be the first on location, all while dealing with obstacles thrown up by a curse.

The popular Twitter account Exhibitor Relations pointed out the change yesterday, noting that while most major motion pictures will get a "TBA" or simply be shifted to another free date, Uncharted is thus far just removed from the schedule. This may suggest that the film has been cancelled altogether.

That doesn't seem to be the case if you're following filmmaker Joe Carnahan, who had been tapped to write the movie. He teased an action-heavy first act.

While the project doesn't currently have any actors attached, Man of Steel producer Charles Roven and The Amazing Spider-Man producer Avi Arad are among those attached to make the film happen. They've struggled to get it off the ground, though, with several iterations of the project happening in a fairly short period as directors and actors came in and out.

Principal photography on Uncharted was supposed to begin last year, but the various delays and changes made that impossible. That made it seem pretty unlikely that Sony would hit its June 2017 release date even before the movie was pulled from the schedule.

Uncharted is based on the hit video game franchise released exclusively to Sony's PlayStation formats with an eye toward developing it as a film-and-merch franchise that Sony could exploit. There are four main games as well as some games designed for mobile platforms and even a board game. Before the movie adaptation started to happen, Uncharted spawned a number of tie-in projects including books, comics, and motion comics.
