Today at the "Divided We Stand" panel from New York Comic Con, Marvel Comics announced plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the unbeatable Squirrel Girl.
The celebration will take place in The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #16. Shipping in Jan. 2017, the issue will mark the 25th anniversary of Squirrel Girl's first appearance in Marvel Super-Heroes Vol. 2 #8 down to the very month (January 1992).
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #16 brings back Squirrel Girl's co-creator Will Murray to write his second ever Squirrel Girl story, drawn by regular The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl artist Erica Henderson. The story flashes back to Squirrel Girl's 15th birthday. Her birthday present? A run-in with the Incredible Hulk!
That's just one of two stories, as Henderson teams up with regular The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl writer Ryan North to continue the ongoing tale of Squirrel Girl's college days.
While Squirrel Girl has been in existence for 25 years, there was a prolonged period of inactivity that followed her debut. It wasn't until she was featured in 2005's revival of the Great Lakes Avengers that the character began to become a true fan favorite.
Since then, she's battle Deadpool and Galactus and Thanos and babysat baby Danielle for Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Most recently she starred in her own solo series, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. She's also been a member of the Avengers Idea Mechanics sponsored New Avengers in the current run of New Avengers and will continue to be featured as part of USAvengers. Marvel also just released a new graphic novel, Squirrel Girl Beats Up The Marvel Universe.
