If you have seen Doctor Strange, then you know the ending is a rather fitting one. Fans watch as Mads Mikkelsen’s Kaecilius gets everything he’s ever wanted – well, mostly. The antagonist finds himself joined with the dark entity Dormammu for a miserable eternity after Doctor Strange bargains with him. Fans were no doubt happy to see the villain go bye-bye, but he is by no means dead.
And, now, Mikkelsen is teasing that Kaecilius might make a comeback one day.
The actor spoke with CinemaBlend about the magical film, and Mikkelsen was asked whether his character will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor’s answer was vague, but he did not strike out the possibility of Kaecilius’ return.
“I don’t know,” Mikkelsen said. “He was not looking too sharp in the end of this movie, but you never know.”
When the site noted that Kaecilius didn’t technically in the film, the actor answered with a grin. He said, “Yeah, it’s like [snaps] a blink of an eye away.”
Obviously, Kaecilius isn’t the only villain from the MCU to make a unclear departure from the franchise. Fans saw a similar exit in Iron Man and Thor. The origin stories left fans wondering about the fate of their villains, and the latter’s baddie Loki made a rather vengeful return in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.
In fact, there is yet another origin tale that offs its antagonist in a similar fashion. In Captain America: The First Avenger, Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull was presumed dead-ish after coming in contact with the Tesseract’s power. However, the intergalactic object simply transported the maniac to another point in time and space, so there’s always a chance he could come back to Earth.
Maybe Dormammu will grow tired of tormenting Kaecilius at some point and allow the zealot to escape the Dark Dimension?
It is no secret that Mikkelsen would be interested in exploring Kaecilius a bit further. The actor recently told press members as a conference that he saw his role as a heroic one.
“I always think all characters as a hero,” he said. “I think we have look at them that way. The key to any good villain, which I think was very clear from the beginning of this journey, is that they have a point. It’s not completely crazy what they’re saying. That is a point, even in Doctor Strange’s eyes he does believe I have a point, and I think that’s the key for a villain.”
And, when director Scott Derrickson was asked about a Doctor Strange sequel, the man did say he wanted to go deep with its villains. If he wants to explore those characters’ pasts more complexly, then he might want to revive a previous villain and dig deeper into their origins.
