Robert Kirkman Won't Communicate The Walking Dead Ending To AMC

It's no secret that Robert Kirkman knows how he wants to end The Walking Dead. The writer and creator of the best known zombie series in history has said from the beginning he knows how Rick Grimes' story will end (and it involves killing him eventually) and has even admitted to changing it along the way.

That said, Kirkman is also keeping The Walking Dead ending to himself. Not even the team at AMC seven years into constructing the live action adaptation of his comics knows how the books are going to end. It's actually part of the reason Kirkman says The Walking Dead comics will have a different ending than the TV series.

"Yeah, I know exactly how it ends, and I'm always taking baby steps toward that point as I'm telling the story," Kirkman said.

It will be a while before we see the ending of The Walking Dead on either platform.

"I know what the end point is, and at the end of the day, I want this entire long narrative to be a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end," Kirkman said. "We're just spending a lot of time in the middle, so, I kind of have to know what that direction is, and I have to know what that end point is to be able to keep building towards it."

In fact, there is "no communication whatsoever" between Kirkman's efforts on the comics and TV series according to the writer. "They have no approval over what happens in the comics," Kirkman said.

Showrunner Scott Gimple is an avid fan of Kirkman's graphic novels which keeps him from asking for spoilers ahead of each book's release.

"They're kind of 100% in the dark, which I guess is pretty remarkable, and I would probably say it's a testament to the trust that AMC has in me," Kirkman said. "I mean, I guess to a certain extent, at this point, the comic book is kind of a workshop of future seasons of the show, and it's fun to think that I can just completely torpedo the story if I wanted to."

With how easily spoilers slip through the cracks, keeping the ending to himself is probably a wise move for Kirkman.
