Star Wars' Carrie Fisher Explains Why She Decided To Reveal Harrison Ford Affair Now

It has been a busy few weeks for Carrie Fisher. The Star Wars actress has been busy promoting her new book The Princess Diarist. The novel contains diary entries Fisher wrote will filming the original three Star Wars films, and Fisher decided to reveal a shocking secret in the book. The actress confirmed she had a brief affair with co-star Harrison Ford during shooting, and fans were stunned to learn about the romance.

Now, Fisher is revealing why she chose to reveal the secret now after all these years. The actress appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and she shed light on the shocking revelation.

"Well, I will probably get early-onset Alzheimers and forget and then you'd never know," she joked. The actress then continued. "No, I found the diaries, and I decided to publish them - and it was a mistake. It is too big of a story."

"It was 40 years ago," she later said about the tenuous affair. "If I waited 50 [to reveal the secret], I would look even worse, so that's why now is the right time."

If you are not familiar with Fisher's affair, then you should know the actress embarked on a torrid affair with Harrison Ford while filming Star Wars. The two met with she was almost 20 and Ford was a 34-year-old married man. The affair began after the two attended a birthday party for George Lucas, and Ford offered to drive Fisher home since she had drank too much wine. The night ended with them in bed together, and Fisher told People, "It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend."

According to Fisher, the affair wasn't as magical as fans might think and the actress said she was a bad kisser at the time. In her diary, Fisher wrote about how she fell for the older man and hoped he might one day marry her, but Fisher's dream were shattered when Harrison returned to his wife when shooting ended on Star Wars. The actress also said his eventual divorce with his then-wife was not in any way related to the affair.

Since Fisher revealed the affair, the actress has said she feels bad about making the relationship public. She told the Today Show that Ford is a private man, so she feels "really bad doing that to him." However, she did get the actor's blessing to unveil the affair before putting it on paper.
