Kurt Sutter, creator of the hit motorcycle drama Sons Of Anarchy, is a man of many talents. He served as a writer and producer on The Shield, wrote the script for the Jake Gyllenhaal boxing film Southpaw, created the wide world of Sons Of Anarchy, and has launched a couple of successful comic series for BOOM! Studios.

It began with the Sons Of Anarchy comic, which supplemented the series in its final seasons. Then, Sutter helped release the SOA prequel comic, Redwood Original, which tells the story of 18-year-old Jax Teller trying to find his place in his father’s motorcycle club. Much of the comic revolves around Jax and Opie’s relationship, and how the club helped them grow into the men fans knew from the show.
Sutter has also released Lucas Stand for BOOM!, which was his first original comic book. Stand is an anti-hero, much like Jax Teller, and the book has proven that Sutter has mastered the art of broken protagonists.
This week, BOOM! and Sutter announced a new series, and this one seems to be the writer’s craziest concept yet.
Sisters Of Sorrow will debut at San Diego Comic Con next July, and revolves around a group of assassin-nuns. Yes, that’s correct, nuns with guns.
In an interview with Deadline, Sutter opened up about his inspiration behind the new series.
“I’ve been wanting to create a mythology around kick ass female charactersโand in this current sociopolitical climate, it seems more important than ever.”
Sutter went on to describe the premise with a little more detail.
“Sisters Of Sorrow is the story of four women, all victims of violent crimes, who unite to exact revenge on their perpetrators. By day, they are peaceful community activists in downtown LA. By night, they don bulletproof black leather under crisp white habits, strapped with state-of-the art weapons and the skills to use them.”
This sounds like a one-of-a-kind comic, and a thrill-ride that no one but Sutter could deliver effectively.
In addition to Sisters Of Sorrow, Sutter is busy producing the Sons Of Anarchy spin-off series, Mayans MC, for FX. The show is set to premiere in the Fall of 2017.
