Star Wars, Deadpool, The Walking Dead Top Twitter’s Trending List Of 2016

This year saw a plethora of genre properties make it into the mainstream conversation, and ones that were already there just reinforced their hold on social media.

Twitter released their top trending movies of 2016, and it includes many of your favorite properties. At No. 10 sits Ghostbusters, who can credit most of its social media interactions to either defending it from naysayers or general critical remarks. That buzz, unfortunately, did not translate into box office numbers, though most who saw the film actually enjoyed it.

No. 9 is Disney’s Zootopia, which was widely beloved in both commercial and critical circles. At No. 8 was Leonardo Dicaprio’s The Revenant, which was also the source of one of the biggest individual Tweets of the year after DiCaprio won his Oscar for the film. His Tweet “Thank you to the Academy and the incredible cast & crew of #The Revenant #Oscars” set a record for most retweets per minute of any Oscars (via Variety).

At No. 7 is Finding Dory, followed by Disney’s other juggernaut Captain America: Civil War. Most of the social media buzz for both was extremely positive, as opposed to No. 5 on the list, DC and Warner Bros. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It was talked about at great length on social media, but you’d be hard pressed to find many positive reactions to the original theatrical version. Things seemed a bit more on the up and up when the Ultimate Edition released, but at that point, the audience was already on to other things.

No. 4 is Harry Potter overall, though that includes the well-received Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. At No. 3 is FOX’s Deadpool, which was only bolstered by star Ryan Reynolds fantastic musings on his personal Twitter feed. The immense box office also didn’t hurt things.

At No. 2 is Suicide Squad, which has been probably the most divisive in regards to expectations and the final theatrical cut fans received. Whereas with Batman v Superman you had opinions of both extremes, with Suicide Squad it’s quite the opposite, as many sit somewhere in the middle.

No. 1 should be no surprise, as Disney’s Star Wars takes the top spot. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is hitting theaters later this month, and talk has already started picking up in regards to Star Wars: Episode VIII, so expect this to be a trend for 2017 as well.

The TV side of things also included two well regarded genre shows in The Walking Dead (which sits at No. 2) and Game of Thrones, which took the top spot. Both shows are looking to make strong showings next year as well, so you’ll most likely see them in 2017 too.
