There aren’t many surprises in Friday’s box office totals, as Disney’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story took top honors.
Rogue One was shown in 4,157 locations and brought in another $22.8 million in earnings. It qualified as the top performer for Friday, but it is showing a significant drop from last Friday where it earned $71 million (via Variety). If it keeps this pace, it is expected to net around $323 million by the end of the weekend.

The day’s other big performer is Illumination and Universal’s newest animated film Sing, which brought in $13.1 million at 4,022 locations. It’s expected to be in the $70 million range when all is said and done.
As for the anticipated but poorly reviewed Passengers, it took in $4.5 million on Friday and should open around $30 million. The studio had hoped for a $35 to $40 million payday, but it seems the negative word of mouth might have drawn away some of that initial traffic.
From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are producing, with John Knoll and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers.
