As Supergirl begins the final descent of its second season, the network has announced the season two finale will be titled 'Nevertheless, She Persisted," per showrunner Andrew Kreisberg.

The title is a nod to Senator Elizabeth Warren's (D – MA) refusal to remain silent during the Senate confirmation hearings to confirm then-Senator Jeff Sessions as Attorney General under the Trump Administration.

After Warren refused to cede the floor as she was reading a letter written by the late Coretta Scott King, a senate vote was held to silence the Massachusetts senator from further debating the issue.

As Warren was silenced, Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R – KY) uttered the phrase, "Senator Warren was giving a lengthy speech. She had appeared to violate the rule. She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted."

In the age of the internet, the last part of the saying quickly became a rallying cry for female activists across the world and it's certainly made its mark in pop culture as well. Just last week, an episode of Agents of SHIELD made a nod to the phrase of the show's protagonist Daisy Johnson had overcome torture to escape captivity.

This season of Supergirl has taken on societal topics — such as immigration and the LGBTQ community — head on all season long, so it's only fitting a show led by a female character wraps up the season in a fashion as such. 'Nevertheless, She Persisted' airs on Monday, May 22.

Alex (Chyler Leigh) is kidnapped and the kidnapper threatens to kill her unless Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) releases a notorious criminal from prison. Supergirl and Maggie (Floriana Lima) have always had different approaches to apprehending criminals but this time they must work together to save Alex. Meanwhile, Rhea (guest star Teri Hatcher) has an interesting proposal for Lena (Katie McGrath). Rob Greenlea directed the episode written by Eric Carrasco & Greg Baldwin.

Supergirl airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. "Alex" debuts tonight.
