Black Panther’s first teaser trailer hit last night during the NBA Finals, giving fans their first look at several aspects of the anticipated film. That includes T’Challa’s half sister Shuri, and now director Ryan Coogler has shared a few more details.
Shuri is played by actress Letitia Wright and can be seen wielding two Panther-themed blasters in the new footage.

That feeds directly into what makes Shuri a great character according to Coogler, who told EW that Shuri is not only a fighter but a brilliant scientist, comparing her to Tony Stark. She’s spent most of her life researching and using Vibranium in her projects, and the twin blasters seen in the footage are just one of several devices she’ll use in the movie.
This fits with what Wright has previously said about Shuri. “She’s so vibrant; a beautiful spirit, but also so focused on what she does,” said Wright. “And that’s good for other people to see, especially young people to see, because it’s like, “Look, there’s a young black girl who loves technology and she’s from Africa.” It’s something refreshing.”
