The last 24 hours have been a whirlwind for Lucasfilm, Star Wars, and the Han Solo spinoff movie after news broke that directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were no longer involved with the production.

Their departure is a shocking development considering the film has been in production for five months, with just a few weeks remaining for shooting as well as the subsequent reshoots. The development doesn’t bode well for the film’s May 25, 2018 release date, though Lucasfilm execs insist the movie is still on track.
After the delay to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the reshoots on that movie and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, fans are understandably worried about process for Rian Johnson’s film in the franchise which is set to be released December 15. But the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi insists there is not a problem with his film and that he has had total creative control regarding the eighth installment in the ongoing saga.
I had as much creative control on TLJ as I’ve ever had on any of my own movies.

Johnson’s words might inspire confidence in some but given the recent events they could ring hollow for others. Johnson also wrote the script for the movie himself, where as Miller and Lord were working off of what was written by Star Wars legend Lawrence Kasdan, whom they reportedly conflicted with on the Han Solo set.
The Last Jedi also hasn’t been reported to undergo the same substantial reshoots that The Force Awakens and Rogue One received during their productions, which bodes well for the final product when it hits theaters.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres December 15.
