Here’s How Much Creative Control Marvel Studios Had On Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters in just a few weeks. And with it comes a partnership unlike no other, with Sony and Marvel Studios collaborating on bringing the newest adaptation of the character to the big screen.

But many fans have wondered exactly how that partnership manifested with the film, particularly in its creative process. With Sony recently announcing that they will produce their own MCU-tied Spider-Man spinoffs, much to the confusion of fans and seemingly Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, fans wondered if there was a sort of creative clash between the two companies.

But according to Feige, the two studios created a good partnership – one that ultimately gave Marvel Studios a large amount of creative control on Homecoming. During a recent interview with THR, Feige explained how the overall creative negotiation of the film came about.

“It really came down to me telling Amy [Pascal] in her office that I think the best thing for this character is: Sony has the rights, that’s not changing.” Feige revealed. “Have Sony pay for the movie, distribute the movie, market the movie. Just let us make the movie and incorporate him into our universe.”

Many Marvel fans essentially expected that, especially after the effort that was taken on Marvel Studios’ part to introduce the character in Captain America: Civil War. As Feige put it, bringing the web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe helped both studios take Homecoming into territory unexplored by the previous Spider-Man films.

“Suddenly this goes from being a third reincarnation and a sixth movie to a first,” says Feige. “It’s the first time Spider-Man gets to interact with the world in which he belongs.”

It’s currently unclear where the creative control will fall with Sony’s proposed Spider-Man spinoffs, but we have a few theories as to how the films could be brought into the MCU.
