If SpongeBob Squarepants and his trusty pal Patrick the starfish were actual, living beings, their physical appearance would be…well, kind of boring.
“Sponge Bob and Patrick in real life would just be a sponge and starfish. Reality is not that exciting,” said ComicBook.com’s own Jamie Lovett when faced with the horrifying abomination that is artist Miguel Vasquez‘s imagining of the characters.

Nevertheless, the internet is taken with the bizarre and troubling images, largely because while real life would be somewhat disappointing for fans of talking sponges, a live-action adaptation of Patrick and SpongeBob’s canonical animated features would be more interesting.
Did we say interesting? We meant disturbing. Hauntingly, mind-bendingly disturbing.
You can check out a gallery of images of the “IRL” SpongeBob and Patrick below, and even more from this and other projects at Vasquez’s gallery of 3D art at the link above.
While the proportions of SpongeBob’s face make him look like an ’80s horror villain or perhaps some strange bastard child of Dobby from the Harry Potter franchise, it’s Patrick’s looming, unsmiling visage that will haunt your dreams until this image is inevitably ripped off to create a villain for the next Ninja Turtles movie.
