Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity is gearing up to return for the first of its final two episodes, and the first look images and story synopsis are now giving an idea of what fans can expect to see go down. Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War returned for its fourth and final season of episodes earlier this Summer, but unfortunately it had announced a surprise month long delay before the release of its final two episodes. But thankfully the wait is finally over.

With the penultimate episode of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity making its debut this week following its hiatus, the franchise has dropped the first look images for Episode 49. Teasing the final battle against Yhwach, the synopsis for the episode sets up the multi-regional fight with many characters involved. And this is a huge departure from how it all went down in Tite Kubo’s original Bleach manga version of the events.
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 49 Preview Images Revealed
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity Episode 49 will be officially making its debut on Monday, October 19th at 8:30AM PT with Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. This will be the Japanese language audio version with English subtitles, and the English dubbed version of Episode 49 will be launching with Hulu on November 23rd at 8:30AM PT. As detailed by the anime’s official website, the penultimate episode of the series is titled “The Blade,” and picks up right after the cliffhanger as Yhwach invades all three major regions as part of his takeover.
“Transcending dimensions, Yhwach simultaneously appears in the Soul Society, the Human World, and Hueco Mundo, declaring his intention to reduce the world to nothingness and create a new world without the ‘fear of life’ or the ‘fear of death,’” the synopsis for the episode teases. “However, Ichigo, who rose from the depths of despair, and his allies, including the Soul Reapers and Arrancar, have not yet given up on this world. In each of the three realms, the final bloody battle against Yhwach begins.” Which is a total departure from the manga.
How Is Bleach‘s Anime Ending Different From the Manga?
There are only two and a half chapters left from Tite Kubo’s original Bleach manga for the anime to adapt with these final episodes, and about 75% of those chapters are focused on the epilogue that takes place years after the fight. The final fight with Yhwach himself is only about ten or so pages, and didn’t see him fully invading all three worlds. The previously released trailer and these first look images also tease that other characters will be involved in fending off Yhwach, and that’s something that didn’t take place in the original. Which means the anime is making this the most expansive final fight yet.
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War has been making all sorts of welcome changes to the original way the final arc played out in the manga as Kubo has been working closely together with the production team to make it the most complete version of the story. If the anime is able to stick the landing with these changes in the final two episodes, then this is going to be one of the most memorable finales yet.
