More cast members will be revealed in the upcoming Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump magazine on Thursday. This is the second Tokyo Ghoul live-action play to debut in Japan, the first one debuted back in 2015 at AiiA Theater in Tokyo. The director and scriptwriter from the first play, Isamu Kayano and Chuji Mikasano, will be returning for the upcoming play as well.
Tokyo Ghoul is popular for adaptations this year as it also has a live-action film that is set to open on July 29th. If you are unfamiliar with the franchise, Viz Media describes the story below:
“Ghouls live among us,โ the same as normal people in every way – except their craving for human flesh.โ Shy Ken Kaneki is thrilled to go on a date with the beautiful Rize.โ But it turns out that she’s only interested in his body – eating it,โ that is.โ When a morally questionable rescue transforms him into the first half-human half-Ghoul hybrid,โ Ken is drawn into the dark and violent world of Ghouls,โ which exists alongside our own.โ”
Tokyo Ghoul first debuted in September 2011 thanks to mangaka Sui Ishida. The Weekly Young Jump published the manga before it was adapted into an anime series by Pierrot. The anime premiered in July 2014 before a second season ran in January 2015. A third season has yet to be announced by any party.
The new play will run in Tokyo from June 29 through July 4 at the Theatre 1010. The play will then run on July 8-9 at Osaka’s Umeda Arts Theater.
