The Mobile Suit Gundam franchise is one that’s always looking to reinvent its mecha technology, and a slew of anime titles have strived to do just that. From Mobile Suit Gundam to Iron-Blooded Orphans, some truly gnarly and powerful Gundam suits have been created for fans to fawn over.
Here at ComicBook, we are counting down just a few of the most formidable Gundam suits out there. While strength is par for the course, these suits truly shine thanks to their pilots, armory, and intimidating reputations.
Barbatos Gundam
Don’t let this Gundam fool you. The Barbatos may be 300 years old, but it runs as spryly as ever thanks to its pilot Mikazuki. Iron-Blooded Orphans debuted this Gundam suit a couple years back, and fans were intrigued by its Alaya-Vijana technology. The Gundam is able to connect with Mikazuki since the pilot has surgical hook-ups grafted into his spine which make the suit an extension of his body. With plenty of assistance, Barbatos has become a beloved underdog in the fandom thanks to its age and unexpectedly lithe fighting style.ย

Unicorn Gundam
It is hard to hate on the Unicorn Gundam. Some may like to poke fun at the suit’s name, but pilots like Banagher Links know better than to misjudge the suit. Unicorn is one of the best-known psychoframe Gundam suits in the anime, and Links can use that tech to great advantage. The frame gives Unicorn a new kind of flexibility and responsiveness, helping pilots maneuver their suits with the slightest thoughts. When Unicorn is equipped in its New Type Destroyer state, opponents better watch out. Link’s brainwaves can give Unicorn a boost when the suit enters its destroyer mode, and then all bets come flying off the table.

Zeta Gundam
For its time, the Zeta Gundam suit was a godsend for pilots Camille, Judau, and Roux. Unlike its predecessors, Zeta adopted a more sleek aesthetic rather than a blocky facade. The change gave the suit a more aerodynamic feel, and pilots noted the suit could move faster than its contemporaries. Zeta’s armory is also fully stocked, and the suit can even transform into a plane when confronted with a planet’s atmosphere. There’s also the fact that Zeta contains the Psycommu system, a rudimentary system when let Camille become ‘one’ with the suit in mind and body.

Pyscho Gundam
When it comes to overall offensive, there are few Gundam suits which can compare with Pyscho. The suit debuted in Z Gundam, and it was piloted by the Four Murasame. Known as a Super Gundam, its stark black-and-yellow color scheme keyed fans into its massive power. Not only can the Pyscho transform into a full-on fortress, but the suit’s armory is stacked like none other. The Gundam has all sorts of beam canons and even uses an updated Psycommu system to give the Four Murasame control over the impenetrable suit. So, really, it’s just a shame that the pilots were more than a little unstable .
