It used to be that you couldn’t throw a rock (bird?) without running into someone playing some form of the massively popular Angry Birds game. So when news broke that the franchise was coming to the big screen it came as a surprise to no one. However, since the game’s release from Rovio Entertainment in 2009, sales aren’t quite what they used to be – dropping 73% from last year.

In a report by Reuters, Rovio CEO Pekka Rantala is hoping to turn the Angry Birds brand around and breathe new life into it. With Sony Picture’s Imageworks already on board to create the film, there’s an interesting little nugget that Rantala mentioned to his investors – the marketing budget will exceed the production budget of $80 million. To put that into perspective, the first Avengers film had a marketing budget of just about $100-150. Given what we saw for that movie, this means we could be seeing Angry Birds just about everywhere as we get closer to the film’s release.
Angry Birds is slated for release on May 20th, 2016 and stars Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad & Danny McBride.
