While the Django Unchained film generated quite a bit of controversy, the toys based on the film have proven to be even more controversial. As Comicbook.com reported the other week, Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network and Project Islamic Hope had called for a boycott of Django Unchained action figures. In a statement to the New York Daily News, NAC’s president Rev. K.W. Tulloss had said, “Selling this doll is highly offensive to our ancestors and the African American community. The movie is for adults, but these are action figures that appeal to children. We don’t want other individuals to utilize them for their entertainment, to make a mockery of slavery.”Now, it appears that the controversial Django Unchained action figures have been officially discontinued. According to TMZ, their sources indicate that the Weinstein Company (the film’s producers) asked National Entertainment Collectibles Association (who made the licensed toys) to stop production. Reportedly, the toy company has complied with the request.
