A feature in the newest issue of Bloomberg Businessweek, spotlighting Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy has a villainous surprise in store for fans.Bloomberg Businessweek was present while Feige and, Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn were previewing a rough, animated version of the film. The pair became focused on a particular frame “of an imposing-looking villain any serious comic book fan would recognize instantly. He sits on a rocket-powered throne.”Gunn and Feige discuss the frame, unhappy with how it looks. Gunn says the villain needs to look more “imperious,” and Feige suggests they replace the rockets with gravity discs. When it’s over, Feige swears the Businessweek writer to secrecy, saying, “That could not be a bigger spoiler.”So who is the mysterious villain on a rocket throne? The obvious and most likely answer is Thanos. We know that Thanos is present in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to his brief appearance in The Avengers. We’ve been told that Nebula and Ronan, known villains in Guardians of the Galaxy, are agents of Thanos. We know that Star-Lord possesses one of the Infinity Stones, which Thanos wants. Also, who else in the Marvel Universe rocks a rocket-powered throne like Thanos?Of course, his involvement wouldn’t be terribly surprising to most Marvel fans. He’s a known enemy of the Guardians, his involvement in the events of the film have been advertised, and being a cosmic-level Marvel threat is kind of his whole thing. But no one has known for certain that Thanos would be showing up in person in Guardians of the Galaxy, and, for the less comic book literate fans out there, who still only know him as that scary guy at the end of The Avengers, it’s sure be to a shocker.Of course, it’s always fun to entertain longshot theories. As far as “imperious” villains go, Dr. Doom is out since Fox has the rights to him and cosmic isn’t really his thing, but who would have seen Kang the Conqueror coming? Still, our money is firmly on Thanos.Guardians of the Galaxy comes to theaters August 1, 2014.
