Jake Gyllenhaal is currently promoting his boxing movie Southpaw and took some time to reminisce about the superhero roles he was at one time considered for.

While filming 2002’s Seabiscuit, Tobey Maguire injured his back and wasn’t sure if he could reprise his titular role for Spider-Man 2 (2004). Director Sam Raimi didn’t wait around to find out and put Gyllenhaal on standby as Maguire’s replacement. Maguire was able to recover from his ailment and suited up as the Webhead once more. Then in 2003, director Christopher Nolan auditioned Gyllenhaal to be The Dark Knight/Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins (2005), but he ultimately chose Christian Bale.

“I believe whatever happens, happens for good. I was definitely open to both the roles (of Spider- Man and Batman),” Gyllenhaal admitted. “However at a certain point you realise there is always someone more interesting, talented and ready to do the role. In any case, you are not going to get every role you go for. So you can say I neither rue nor am I thankful for having not worked on these superhero films.”
