OK! Magazine reports in their February issue that executives at Marvel Studios were very impressed with Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken and have offered her $20 million to direct their first female-led superhero movie Captain Marvel.

In addition to admiring Jolie’s work on the biographical war drama about Louis “Louie” Zamperini, Marvel desires Jolie because they want a woman’s touch on Captain Marvel. “Having a female director is a priority for them,” explained their inside source
Jolie is said to be keen on Marvel’s offer. “She never thought she’d be in such huge demand as a director, and to be courted by Marvel after the Sony fiasco is a huge pat on the back,” their source added. That last part refers to leaked emails in which producer Scott Rudin made some unflattering remarks to Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal about Jolie, like calling her a “minimally talented spoiled brat” and “a camp event.”
I do find it hard to believe that Marvel would fork over $20 million to Jolie when she has only directed two films so far, no matter how well directed they are. The other being 2011’s In the Land of Blood and Honey.
Whoever Marvel brings in they will have a lot of pressure placed upon them to make sure Captain Marvel is a hit. Let’s face it, Marvel Studios doesn’t have the film rights to a lot of their best female superheroes. Captain Marvel is their female version of Superman. The former air force pilot can fly and is super-fast, super-strong, invulnerable and has energy projectile powers. It is vital for Marvel to prove that they can make a female led superhero movie work. If it did, it would open the door for even more of Marvel’s female characters to get their own solo films as well.
Captain Marvel is scheduled for release on July 6, 2018.
