Following Prometheus‘ release in 2012, Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant promises to bridge the gap between his original Alien franchise and its prequels. As the film is undergoing production in New Zealand, the official Alien Facebook page has teased fans with an exclusive behind-the-scenes photo.

The photo features Ridley Scott gathering the film’s cast and crew for what appears to be a conversation regarding shooting. Off to the left, fans can see an out-of-focus Michael Fassbender listening closely as the Scott preps everyone for the day’s schedule. Uploaded earlier today, fans are reacting positively to the sneak-peak as the page paired the photo with the tagline, “Creator. Creation. #AlienCovenant.”

With 20th Century Fox distributing, Alien: Convenant received a synopsis several months back from the studio. The blurb buzzes that Ridley Scott’s next Alien installment will be “dark” and “dangerous” as the film connects Prometheus with the first Alien film from 1979. The full description can be read below:

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in Alien with Alien: Covenant, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus โ€“ and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world โ€“ whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

Alongside Michael Fassbender, the actor will be joined by newcomers like Katherine Waterston and Danny McBride amongst others. While they were vocal about their disappointment in Prometheus, fans have high hopes that Alien: Covenant will stay truer to the original sci-fi horror films. In a recent interview with The Wrap, Ridley Scott teases his new project will do just that.

When asked about the film, Ridley Scott said, “Well, really it’s Alien. They’re going to go to the planet where the engineers came from, and come across the evolving creature that they had made. Why did they make itโ€ฆthe movie will explain that, and reintroduce the alien back into it.”

Slated for release in August 2017, Alien: Covenant hopes to fill in gaps for Alien fans who’re eager to explore the history behind the series’ monstrous Xenomorphs. And, for Scott Ridley, the film offers a chance to flesh out the complex storyline of his original Alien films.
