The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise initially launched in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The four films released in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise to date have generated over $3.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

The fifth installment of the franchise will reportedly be subtitled “Dead Men Tell No Tales.” Jeff Nathanson is writing the screenplay for Pirates of the Caribbbean 5, and Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg are directing.

Just like with Marvel Studios recently announcing five release dates for untitled Marvel films, Disney probably wanted to get a release date out there in advance of Comic-Con to lay first claim to the date.
