You wanna’ be the very best? Like no one ever was? Well, if you’re quest is to catch ’em all, you might want to read what Pokemon GO player Nick Johnson has to say. The Brooklyn-based trainer is the first player to publicly confirm that he’s captured all of the 142 pokemon available in the U.S.

Working by day and training at night, Johnson spoke with Business Insider to give aspiring trainers a few helpful tips when it comes to capturing pokemon. While you can read the list below, there is one particular tip that Johnson stresses above all others: Get great shoes. He recommended, “Buy some good walking shoes,” and this guy most definitely knows what he’s talking about as Johnson would walk up to 8 miles a day on his journey.
So, you ready for the pro’s tips? Check out some of Johnson’s tips:
- If you’re trying to cover distance to find pokemon or catch eggs, Johnson says it’s best to jog and to move in a straight line. He explains that Pokemon GO measures players’ distances every so often, calculating how far they’ve moved based on the straight-line distance from where they had been to where they are now.
- Are you trying to level up fast? Well, you should probably focus on evolving your everyday pokemon like Weedle, Zubat, etc. Since those creatures take fewer candies to evolve, you can level up more quickly with them then, say, a rarer pokemon that takes 50+ candy to evolve. Just – don’t try this was a Magikarp, please. It’ll take forever.
- Should you decide to spend some hard-earned cash on the app, Johnson says players should pay up for egg incubators. They’ll give trainers the most bang for their buck, and at the end, it’ll leave them with a surprise pokemon to keep company.
- Talk to other trainers! While Pokemon GO doesn’t have any social feature or messaging capabilities yet, Johnson stresses that fellow trainers can be a wealth of information. “If you don’t know where to find a specific Pokรฉmon, ask your fellow trainers! They’re usually happy to help out,” he said. So, check Reddit or Facebook and try contacting players who may know where that one pokemon you’ve been searching for tends to chill out.
- Johnson also says that bringing two phones with you while you’reout venturing can be helpful. He would often borrow his girlfriend’s phone to use as a radar whenever he was caught up in gym battles. Having the extra screen ensured he never missed out on a pokemon when he was occupied elsewhere.
- If you’re really up for it, there’s one more tip Johnson shared for determined trainers. While most know Niantic developed Pokemon GO, few know the developer was also responsible for creating another GPS-based game, Ingress. In Ingress, players can check out local maps to locate white dots which are called XM. These points are areas with high concentration of XM, and surprisingly, those locales usually correspond with areas in Pokemon GO that contain rare pokemon. So, if you’re having trouble getting a certain creature, it might be worth checking out Ingress to sort out where ‘special’ areas are near you.
