Recently, Freeman spoke to Entertainment Weekly about Baby Watson and explained how the little girl would change the show’s dynamics. “John and Mary’s relationship has moved on. We left them last time that Mary was pregnant, so we join them this time and there is a baby,” he started.
When asked how Watson will change in light of parenthood, Freeman had a practical answered lined up. “Well, I think in the ways that it does in real life, I guess โ the ways that it changes you as parents in real life. That’s just a big responsibility. It can’t change the show that much because the dynamic of the show generally speaking is Sherlock and John, and their shenanigans fighting crime, but there has always been an emotional heart to the show as well,” he said.
“It’s not just a procedural CSI type crime of the week thing. It’s also always been about that friendship between those two and the other people in it. John is a little bit changed, but you can’t change the shape of the show too much.”
If a fifth season of Sherlock ever comes around, fans may just get to see Baby Watson a little older and whole lot wiser if Sherlock has anything to say. During the interview, Freeman discussed the possibility of shooting Season 5 and said he was lucky to be a part of the acclaimed series.
“Everyone involved in the show is acutely aware of how well-written it is and how well-produced it is. If you are on a show that is well-written, well-shot, well-scored, and you’re lucky enough to have chemistry with the person, that’s pretty cool. And that doesn’t come along every day. But at the same time, we do want to do other stuff. And thank God we’re all busy. [Co-creators] Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are busy. Everyone’s busy. I wouldn’t want to make any promises either way on that.”
Given how popular both Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch have become in recent years, filming Sherlock has become more challenging for the BBC. As such, fans worried that the fourth season would be its last, and those fears were only amplified earlier in the year after an interview with Cumberbatch went public. It was reported that the actor fourth season felt like the end of an era, but the actor was quick to clarify he was not talking about the series’ end in any way.

The actor explained, “All I’ll say about it is that we’re all very busy. We’re all doing other things now, and you have to see the fourth season to see why it’s not going to happen in the same regularity as it has been happening….When it’s right – and if it’s right – we’ll do more.”
Sherlock Season 4 is set to debut on January 1, 2017.
