There were a lot of callbacks to older episodes in tonight’s episode of The Flash, but not so much in the way of the kind of Easter eggs we’re usually on the lookout for.

Sure, I could give you a whole article full of “remember when this happened last year?” But better to just rewatch Season One’s “The Sound and The Fury.”

We did spot at least a few new things, though…!

So…what did we see? What did we miss?

Read on, and comment below.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is now playing in theaters.

SPEED EQUATION

Speed-Formula

We’ve mentioned Johnny and Jesse quick’s Speed Formula before.

This is the first time it’s actually appeared on the series, as far as we can tell — in the image above, we’ve circled the pertinent equation for ease.

In the comics, Johnny Quick — whose daughter is Jesse Quick, here Harrison Wells’s daughter — developed a formula that would allow him to tap into the Speed Force when he recited it out loud. After he died, the formula was passed down to his daughter.

DEMENTOR

wraith

The time wraiths look a lot like Harry Potter’s Dementors, a thing noted frequently in the episode.

…Funny, since yesterday’s Supergirl referenced Harry Potter, and apparently so will tomorrow’s Arrow.

In any event, the wraiths also kind of resemble the baddies in Lord of the Rings (also Wraiths), or Amelia Cole (the Council).

It’s also worth noting that in DC Comics, there are no time wraiths that I know of…but there is a villain named Dementor, who is related to Guy Gardner. Also, a Green Lantern villain called Wraith, who has no apparent connection to these creatures.

RICKROLL

Hartley Rathaway

…Yes, after having used his knowledge of the future to outsmart Pied Piper, Barry — or at least Team Flash — proceeded to Rickroll the villain, playing Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

It’s an internet meme, wherein you can trick somebody into watching the music video by offering a compelling description of something, with a link that leads to the “Rickroll.”

I am an old person. This is how I describe it.

THE WHITE LOGO

When Cisco sees the white field on the background of the Flash’s lightning bolt, he likes it — but then he speculates whether, having seen it come back from the future, it will actually be a paradox if he changes it, since he only will have gotten the idea from a future when it was already done.

This is very similar to what Cisco said in Season One, the first time Barry saw his older self with the white background on the logo, came up.

PIED PIPER

…And Piper the hero to boot!

In the comics, Pied Piper is a badguy…but one who occasionally crosses the line back over into good guy territory.

Or, at least, he’s not totally bad, and he’s far less aggressive toward The Flash than many of the Rogues.

We see a bit of this here when, after having altered the outcome of Hartley Rathaway’s first appearance last year, Barry sets a new timeline in motion where Hartley has reconciled with his family and isn’t so bitter and violent.
