As great as some of the most popular characters in Marvel Comics are, the underrated ones are just as cool in many regards. With how many iconic characters Marvel has under their belt, there are more than plenty that should be a lot more popular. There are characters with great powers, interesting histories, and limitless potential, but just haven’t taken off. Part of that comes down to how often readers see them on the page, but there are other factors as well. Whatever is holding these characters back, they certainly deserve to be more popular.

From villains to heroes and everything in between, these seven Marvel characters are really interesting, but just aren’t as popular as they should be. Hopefully, that will someday change.
1) Cypher/Revelation

With an event to his name on the horizon, Cypher/Revelation is about to have a renaissance. For the longest time Cypher was seemingly the weakest and most overlooked character from all of the X-Men. Who would have thought the guy who can understand any language could be Apocalypse’s heir? It’s great to see him back on the horizon, even if he might be a villain now.
Even with the character about to be a problem for all mutants, watching Doug get the recognition he’s long deserved for over 40 years now is going to be great. With Warlock on his side with him, the Age of Revelation will be a nightmare for the mutants but probably fun for us the readers.
2) Fantomex

The mystery mutant Fantomex is one of the coolest mutants of recent memory, but also one of the biggest anomalies at the same time. Being able to disguise himself as well as pilot a ship with his brain that also came from his brain, he’s as fascinating as he is mysterious. Add expert level marksmanship as well as being Weapon XIII you have one of the coolest mutants since the 2000s.
Part of what makes him so interesting and unique is also a bit of a detriment to him. Created by Grant Morrison, Fantomex is very complex with his powers as well as how they work. With so much of Morrison’s creative DNA in there, Fantomex either comes off as super cool or half baked despite having some great roles when used. Overall, this is a great character that needs a bit more love.
3) Maximus

Missing in action for years until very recently, Maximus of the Inhumans has been the sly cunning villain we all love to hate. Ever since the infamous era of the Inhumans over at Marvel, most of them haven’t been seen. Maximus may not been the most intimidating villain, but he’s hard to ignore in the roles he has had. As one who typically instigates most issues for the heroes, his status is hard to deny.
His biggest detriment is that he gets a lot of comparisons to Loki. While some see him as a half-rate Loki, he still fits right into his own place in stories and does everything perfectly with that irritating grin on his face. He could have been one of the best villains of the past decade, but never seemed to quite get there. With the love Imperial has been getting, that’s looking to change.
4) Jessica Jones

After the boost of her joining the MCU, Jessica Jones has really been missing since her show and comic ended. As one of the originals created by Brian Michael Bendis, she shines as one of his best and most popular creations. Her hit series Alias was a smash hit and inspired her television show. Her marriage to Luke Cage was also a pretty big deal. Outside of that, she’s been off the radar since all of that ended.
One of the few comic characters that was truly boosted by the MCU, Jessica is in dire need of a comeback. While her live action counterpart is back, it’s also time for Alias to return. Jessica is still popular but her fan base needs more of her. Now might be the perfect time to give her a little bit of a boost now too.
5) Rachel Summers

Easily one of the best leading members of the X-Men ever, Rachel Summers has done it all while being cool at the same time. Taking on the Phoenix Force after her mother, she was able to go toe-to-toe with the Beyonder back in the day. Where does that leave her now, though? Supporting roles in the side X-titles. While it’s good, it’s not nearly enough for one of the best characters created during the Claremont era of X-Men.
Co-leading Excalibur and living up to her parents legacy, Rachel should be on the same tier as the Giant Sized team. Able to handle the Phoenix better than her mother, she should be the one to carry the mantle and at least be a semi-regular member in either of the main X-Men titles.
6) Mania

You’d think Venom getting a sidekick would have been a bigger deal but evidently not. Once the sidekick to Flash Thompson’s Agent Venom, Andrea Benton was given a portion of the symbiote and became his sidekick Mania. While she remained in that title for the rest of the series, it’s remarkable that they didn’t launch a spin-off for her, especially now given how much Venom related content there always seems to be. While Andrea became Scream later on, it feels like a bit of a waste to not include her to this day as the sidekick. It would be a bit messy to be sure, but she was a character with so much potential that went to waste. Then again, Agent Venom isn’t one of the more popular Venom runs.
7) Silk

One of the most interesting spider-people in Marvel has hardly had anything to do as of late. Cindy Moon, aka Silk, was part of Peter Parker’s class and was bitten by the spider that bit him. Having more web-based powers, she was able to craft webs organically as well as gained claws to hone them perfectly. She was a perfect fit to the Spider-mythos but sadly got lost among Miles and Spider-Gwen.
Cindy has every right to be up there with Peter, Miles, and Gwen as the main spider-people. While she’s in the current Spider-Gwen title, it feels like she’s destined for bigger things. Plus with a design as cool as hers, it’s hard to imagine she isn’t more popular. All we know is we want more Silk.
