Wonder Woman is the first solo superhero movie led by a female character in this modern era of films, but that doesn't mean Gal Gadot is alone on the screen at all times. She'll pick up company along the way, whether it's her aunts and "sisters" in the Amazon ranks, her friend Etta Candy, or Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine. After we meet Diana and the Amazons, and learn of their history in Greek mythology, man comes to their world for the first time.
"There she is on the shore, face-to-face with the first man she has ever seen, Steve Trevor," Warner Bros. told ComicBook.com and other press while on a visit to the set at WB Studios London last year. "It's a special moment. They're captivated by each other. He sees this angel. She sees this creature she's unfamiliar with."
Their relationship develops in a "playful, tender" way throughout the film. But aside from introducing him as a love interest for Diana, he plays a pivotal role in her call to action. When Trevor, an American fighter pilot and spy for their forces in World War I accidentally breaks through into the world of Themyscira, it leaves a hole from man's world to Paradise Island open. That allows the German ships to come through, setting up the first major action scene of the film: Amazons, using bows, spears, and swords, versus German WWI era forces with their guns.
From there, Steve Trevor is used to sort of reveal and pull Wonder Woman toward the world of man. He helps her assemble the team they gather to fight Ares, and yes, there will be romance.
"All along the chemistry is there and the closeness is growing, the tenderness is obvious between them."
So Trevor will have his roles to play, but his number one job is to ground Diana in Man's world.
"Chris Pine, he's the love interest, there's no other way to really shape it," producer Curt Kanimodo said. "He's her connection to humanity, I guess you could say. He does it so eloquently, of explaining the shades of grave humanity, that not everything is a certainty." He added that she's absolutely "the leader" with Trevor and his team following what she says and does to the letter.
Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot as Diana, Princess of Themyscira, is in post-production now for a June 2, 2017 release.
Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot, Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine, crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers...and her true destiny.
