Batman’s status as a vigilante has often put him at odds with the Gotham City Police Department, including one of his closest allies Jim Gordon. The latest season of Gotham will put a new twist on that dynamic when it returns in October.

But first, Gordon will have to deal with Oswald Cobblepot’s control of the criminal underworld.
“In the first half of the season this year, Jim Gordon is going to try to loosen Penguin’s hold upon Gotham,” executive producer John Stephens said to DC All Access. “He does that by forming an alliance with Sofia Falcone, who Crystal Reed is playing, and the two of them work together to basically try to dethrone Penguin.”
In the Season Three finale, Bruce Wayne took his first step toward becoming the Dark Knight. He’ll earn some notoriety on the streets of Gotham City as a mysterious vigilante, eventually leading to Detective Gordon to find out who is terrorizing the city’s criminals.
“At the same time, Bruce Wayne is going to go out there and start operating as a vigilante wearing a mask,” Stephens said. “And then moving forward after that, Jim Gordon will realize that this vigilante is operating out there in Gotham somewhere and he goes ‘I’m going to hunt that guy down’ and we have Jim Gordon and a masked Bruce Wayne going head to head.”
As if Gordon and Bruce wouldn’t have their hands full in dealing with each other, they’ll also have to face new villains like Ra’s al Ghul, Professor Pyg, and the Scarecrow, as well as returning threats like the Penguin, Riddler, and others.
Gotham’s fourth season is shaping up to be explosive with major villains lurking in every shadow. But don’t expect to see Bruce and Gordon being enemies for long. This could be the beginning of the foundation being set for their eventual “working” relationship when Batman becomes a full-fledged crime fighter.
We’ll learn more when Gotham premieres Thursday, September 21st at 8 pm ET on FOX.
