Supergirl‘s season 3 “big bad,” Reign, will apparently be a single mother living an unremarkable life when audiences first encounter her this fall.

…Wait, what?!
That’s right: per an Entertainment Weekly story out today in their Fall TV Preview, Reign is a single mom…which in turn suggests there is a very good chance that there is a half-human, half-Kryptonian child about to join the cast of Supergirl.
“When we meet Reign, she’s just a woman,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said. “Her name is Samantha and she’s a single mom, and she has no idea that she is Reign; she has no idea that she was the baby in the pod at the end of last season, so the journey that she takes this season is watching her realize her heritage and see[ing] how it manifests.”
In the comics right now, there is a half-human, half-Kryptonian child living in Metropolis: Jonathan Kent, the son of Superman and Lois Lane, who acts as Superboy when he’s not at school. Given all of the fans who were clamoring for a version of Connor Kent when it came out that Cadmus Labs would exist in season 2, it is not hard to wonder whether the showrunners may consider making Reign’s kid turn out to be a superhero down the line, introducing the potential for a Superboy on Supergirl.
Not that they won’t already have enough super-folks to worry about: given the popularity of Tyler Hoechlin as Superman, it is difficult to imagine that he will not return in season 3 after appearing in the first and last two episodes of season 2. Mon-El, essentially a Superman with a reduced power level and a weakness to lead instead of Kryptonite, is certain to return from his self-imposed exile at the end of last season.
Supergirl will return on October 9, 2017, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
