Supergirl‘s third season has given fans plenty of new changes, and a new fan theory could hint at a major one for Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh).

Spoilers for the midseason finale of Supergirl, “Reign”, below!

This season, Alex has decided that she wants to be a mom at some point in her life, something that ultimately ended her engagement with Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima). Alex has gradually come to terms with her choice, in part thanks to the advice from Sara Lance/White Canary (Caity Lotz) in this year’s “Crisis on Earth-X” crossover.

While it’s too early to tell what’s in store for Alex, some fans have begun to wonder — could she end up adopting Ruby (Emma Tremblay), the daughter of Samantha Arias/Reign (Odette Annable)?

An Established Rapport

Fans were introduced to both Sam and Ruby in Supergirl‘s Season Three premiere, when they crossed paths with — surprise, surprise — Alex. In the episodes since, Sam and Ruby have developed a bond with Alex, Kara Danvers/Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath), which fans have seen throughout the season. Alex even came to terms with wanting to have kids, and breaking up with Maggie because of it, after seeing Ruby perform at her school talent show.

It’s clear that Alex and Ruby have a good rapport together, and that Alex is someone that Sam trusts. (We see you, “Agent Reign” shippers.) While things could unfold differently for Sam’s group of friends as the season goes on, which seems likely, since Sam technically left Kara in a coma at the end of the midseason finale, that most likely wouldn’t change the group’s attitude towards Ruby.

Sam’s Endgame

Admittedly, Sam’s endgame is largely still up in the air, considering how she was first introduced to Supergirl audiences. While Annable has hinted that Sam’s transformation into Reign is “heartbreaking”, some have retained hope that she could be redeemed, possibly as the show’s proxy for Superwoman.

But even if that doesn’t happen, a major change in Sam’s endgame — whether dying or being transported to another location or anything in between — could hint at Ruby needing to find a new home. Especially since Ruby’s grandma, played by Betty Buckley, barely even knows she exists.

Hiding in Plain Sight

Even then, some might still be skeptical about this theory. But it turns out, the first hints of it could have been in Ruby’s first casting announcement.

Back in July of this year, weeks before Tremblay was officially cast in the show, That Hashtag Show discovered several casting announcements for Supergirl‘s third season. Ruby’s primarily hinted at her ties with Sam, and hinted that she’d be a “major recurring guest star”, with “a series regular option of next season.” Sam, by contrast, was only listed for one season as a “fractional series regular”.

Sure, that could mean a variety of different things, especially with so much of Supergirl‘s third season left to go. But Supergirl fans will just have to stay tuned to find out what’s in store for both Alex and Ruby.

Supergirl returns from midseason hiatus on January 15, 2018.
