Tonight’s episode of Arrow saw Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) tortured in solitary confinement at the hands of Adrian Chase/Prometheus (Josh Segarra). While this meant that the rest of Team Arrow was mostly missing from the episode, one former member of the team made an appearance in a surprising way.

Evelyn Crawford/Artemis (Madison McLaughlin) had been missing from the show since the midseason finale, after the team discovered that she was betraying them by working with Prometheus. But in tonight’s episode, Evelyn returned – although things weren’t as positive between her and her previous co-conspirator.

Chase brought Evelyn into Oliver’s cell, and gave the former teammates an ultimatum – to fight to the death, or else Chase would kill Evelyn. Both Evelyn and Oliver were apprehensive about the battle, with Oliver forgiving her for working with Prometheus. Evelyn said that Chase told her that she’s as good as dead for having previous ties to Oliver. She attempted to stab Oliver with a knife, and then failed.

Chase quickly returned and snapped Evelyn’s neck, killing her…or so Oliver thought. After Oliver was passed out on the floor, Evelyn sprang back up, remarking how she’d known that seeing her death would break Oliver.

“The interesting thing about the choices Evelyn has made” Executive producer Wendy Mericle revealed a few months ago, “is that as much as she took the moral high ground when confronting Oliver, she has allied herself with someone who is even worseโ€ฆ She’s gone from the frying pan into the fire.”

Marc Guggenheim echoed that as well, hinting that although her appearance in the back half of this season will be brief, there’s a chance she will return again. “You haven’t seen the last of Artemis, but in the short term, they’ve got some other fish to fry.”
