First revealed at Comic-Con International: San Diego, The Devastator was one of six Batmen from the Dark Multiverse who appeared in promotional art for Metal appearing in most DC Comics last month.

“The origins of these characters, too, are really really special,” Snyder said. “They’re a lot of the nightmares that I thought of: what if Batman goes too far in different ways?”

The one-shots will set up the Nightmare Batmen, and then the big fight between the Justice League and the Dark Knights will be in a story that runs through Green Lantern, The Flash, and Justice League.

“I wanted to call it Steel Cave Match, and I got overruled,” Snyder joked. “There are literally evil Batcaves, each designed to off one of these characters. There’s evil Batmobiles. It’s crazy, crazy fun.”

And how did The Devastator come about? Snyder explained that the Dark Multiverse is much more fluid than the typical DC multiverse, and that it operates almost as a subconscious to the DCU, so that any fear or nightmare or fantasy or musing that the heroes of the DC multiverse have, exists somewhere floating around in its aether.

And The Devastator is a classic example of a villain coming out of a well-meaning hero.

“What if after Superman died, Batman started experimenting with the Doomsday virus in a way that would make sure this never happens again, but it went too far?” Snyder asked.

The image Fabok shared is not just a play on The Devastator as a perfect Bat-weapon to use against Superman, but on a classic Batman visual, as well: the beast roars atop a gargoyle,
