Considered one of the greatest comic actors in America, DeVito has a decades-long resume both on TV and in film. He’s also an acclaimed director with movies like Throw Momma From the Train, The War of the Roses, and Death to Smoochy.
DeVito, who has won both Emmy and Golden Globe Awards, cemented himself into the geek community’s Hall of Fame when he played The Penguin in 1992’s Batman Returns. The iconic performance has inspired the way Oswald Cobblepot has been depicted in other media since, including the way he was written and performed by self-professed DeVito fans on Gotham.
The actor would reteam with his Batman Returns director Tim Burton for Mars Attacks, the campy, bizarre sci-fi comedy based on the classic trading cards.
DeVito is also a prolific producer, and over the years has appeared in dozens of shows and movies in brief appearances because he had a little skin in the game, or friends on the cast.
His other iconic roles include parts in Taxi, One Flew Over The Cucko’s Nest, LA Confidential, Get Shorty, Space Jam, Matilda, and Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
Prior to fame, DeVito worked as a cosmetician after graduating from college. His film debut came in Fred Mancusso’s Italian film Lady Liberty.
Happy birthday, Danny DeVito!
