Most everyone partaking in nerdy fandoms will tell you they have a preference when it comes to DC Comics and Marvel, though most can agree that they’re very similar.

Both have their merits, both have their faults, but at the end of the day there’s no egregious imbalance that separates the two. Either you like them or you don’t, and it’s easy to recognize where your own personal tastes can sway you one way or the other.

And then there’s the mayor of Long Beach, California, who considers himself firmly entrenched in one side of the battlefield.

Mayor Robert Garcia, a self-admitted “comic nerd”, was speaking about his excitement for the new Wonder Woman movie after the amazing final trailer dropped during yesterday’s MTV Movie & TV Awards. And then he made a divisive statement about DC’s biggest competitor with a simple tweet deigning Marvel worse than garbage.

Now, politicians are supposed to let their constituents know where they stand on the issues. And it’s also great to see their personalities shine through on social media platforms—it provides citizens a glimpse into their lives and proves they’re not soulless automatons, no matter what your opinion on their policies may be.

But maybe try not to piss all over one of the most profitable entertainment companies on the globe.

It doesn’t matter what internet community you wade into to make such a proclamation—thems fightin’ words. And we wouldn’t be surprised to find out if Ike Perlmutter starts a SuperPAC himself to get Garcia ousted come election season.

In such a volatile political climate, Mayor Garcia might have just picked a wrong battle to fight.
