At their core, superheroes are inspirational and aspirational in nature; they are intended to give the audience something to strive for and hope for a better world.

So, in a show about the everyday people of the DC Universe, what inspires the cast of NBC's forthcoming super-comedy Powerless and the characters they play?

We talked with Vanessa Hudgens, Danny Pudi, and Alan Tudyk at Comic Con to get their take on it.

"I think Emily," said Pudi of Hudgens's character on the show. "I think Teddy's a really good friend and he's empathetic. I think the nice thing about Teddy is that he doesn't necessarily know what to do all the time, which is interesting. I think superheroes swoop in, they're able to make quick decisions because they have to; they come in times of crisis. I think Teddy's more used to being around before the crisis and way after the crisis and picking up the pieces. I think one of his skills is that he's able to empathize with people and come in and be like 'What should we do?' I guess healing through the power of his words when there are no words sometimes."

"People who are masters as their craft is definitely something that's inspiring, whether that's with art or with film or with movement," said Hudgens. "Just people who are masters of what they do."

"That he's ruthless, that he has power, that he's able to take on powerful superheroes like Superman," said Tudyk of what his character likes about Lex Luthor. "You don't get more super than that. It's in his name. Super. Man. So he aspires to that. He aspires to have power in this Powerless world."

Powerless comes to NBC at midseason, likely in January 2017, from executive producers Michael Patrick Jann and Ben Queen.
