Tonight’s season finale of Supergirl ended with a mystery: who, exactly, was Supergirl looking at?

Well, we know that whoever she was looking at, was inside a rocket that appeared to be Kryptonian in design. But the real question is WHO could be inside a Kryptonian rocket, bound for Earth, just as the battle for the planet’s survival wrapped up?

So…who do we think might be in the rocket? What could leave the Girl of Steel so stunned?

Read on, and feel free to post your own theories below.

CYBORG SUPERMAN

In the post-Flashpoint continuity, the Cyborg Superman — formerly a Superman and Green Lantern villain who was once human — was reinvented as the father of Supergirl, Zor-El, who was rescued from Krypton’s destruction by Brainiac and was reconfigured as a cyborg to be his scout for looking for stronger species in the universe.

Since Indigo is a version of Brainiac, some kind of failsafe related to her destruction might not be totally out of the question.

Also, although it wasn’t (as far as I remember) part of his post-Flashpoint mythology, introducing the Cyborg Superman via a Kryptonian escape pod would make a kind of sense — that’s where the original Cyborg Superman got the DNA to replicate Superman’s tissue in his non-robotic parts.

Ther character — especially in the post-Flashpoint version — would make a great Season Two big bad, and would also tie into the comics somewhat, since the first arc of the post-Rebirth Supergirl will be all about the Cyborg Superman.

SUPERBOY

Superboy Retcon Punch

There are a couple of ways this could prove to be Superboy.

Obviously, when the Cadmus Project was mentioned a few episodes back, it got people wondering about whether we might see the clone version of Superboy, who first appeared in the ’90s and was genetically-engineered at Cadmus. Barring some seriously creative storytelling, that seems unlikely if he’s in a Kryptonian rocket.

But there are two other Superboys, both with ties to the Legion of Super-Heroes, who might be able to account for a young Kal-El popping up in the rocket.

The first is the actual Superboy, from the pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths reality where Superman got powers significantly younger than he did in current mythology. That version of Superboy would likely have made it here the same way The Flash did: by traveling through the multiverse somehow, or at least time. He would just literally be a younger version of Superman.

The other possibility is Mon-El, a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes who isn’t ACTUALLY Kryptonian, but has basically the same power set. He’s from the planet Daxam, and has filled in for Superboy with the Legion a lot.

Of course, this all assumes the Legion exist in the world of Supergirl…but we know they do, thanks to the ring that appeared in “Solitude,” but then was missing from the Fortress when Supergirl returned there last week.

…Curious.

ALURA

Alura Zor-El

Could we — somehow — see Supergirl’s mom?

It’s hard to tell what exactly that would do in terms of propelling the plot forward…but it’s not off the table. Certainly Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg have made no secrets about the fact that they love actress Laura Benanti…and this could give Supergirl a chance to have real closure about what Alura did — rather than yelling at a hologram that as often as not just has nothing to say.

JEREMIAH DANVERS

Jeremiah Danvers

This one is a long, long, longshot.

Why? Because showrunners have indicated that the search for Jeremiah Danvers will be a major plot point in a prospective second season. So if they were to reveal where he was immediately after the season started, that wouldn’t make much sense.

That said, who knows? Maybe it’s some kind of clue or something that would lead to him. But if Cadmus has one of these Kryptonian pods, where did it come from? And who was in it the first time?!

THE ERADICATOR

Could we see The Eradicator?

Certainly it would be one of the weirdest things to show up in a Kryptonian rocket, that would nevertheless make sense there.

An ancient Kryptonian artifact created by members of the House of El during a clone war, The Eradicator was the device that created the Fortress of Solitude for Superman in the post-Crisis era and, eventually, was responsible for his resurrection after he died at the hands of Doomsday.

With a ton of power and vaguely-defined abilities, it’s actually a bit like the Omegahedron, which could mean that it’s a great thing to have around while Max has Non’s big weapon.

It’s also been known to take a physical shape and sentience, so showrunners referring to the character as a character and not an object in interviews could still be technically accurate.

A BABY

Could be any baby. My guess would be the child of Zod and Faora — as seen in Richard Donner and Geoff Johns’s run on Action Comics — or, in a similar twist, the child of Astra and Non, which would mean that the baby is family to Supergirl, in spite of what her aunt and uncle tried to do this season.

In that last case, the timing would make sense: it could be tied to the idea that if they’re somehow defeated, their child would be shot out of Fort Rozz to make sure it has an opportunity to grow strong and grow up — rather than being stuck in suspended animation as an infant.

Heck, when it comes right down to it, just about any baby with the House of El’s sigil on its blankie would probably be enough to cause a serious double-take from Supergirl.
