Spoilers for tonight’s episode of The Flash below!
After last week’s bombshell ending, CW’s The Flash has posed a bunch of unanswered questions going into the season’s final episodes. With the reveal that the season’s Big Bad, Savitar, was actually a future version of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin), many have wondered what it would mean for the show – and if things are more complicated than they appear.

In the opening minutes of tonight’s episode, ‘Cause and Effect‘, the Barry/Savitar conundrum was explained pretty thoroughly – at least for the time being.
As both Savitar!Barry and Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) explained, the version of Barry that became Savitar was actually a time remnant that Barry created four years in the future to stop Savitar. Before he was trapped in the Speed Force, Savitar killed all of Barry’s remnants, but let that particular one live. After he was shunned by the future versions of Team Flash – including the real Barry – this time remnant went insane, and assumed the identity of Savitar.
If this sounds confusing – especially given the show’s already-complex timeline – that’s totally understandable. But this reveal should give viewers – as well as Team Flash – the first indication of how to possibly defeat Savitar.
Barry (Grant Gustin) takes drastic measures to stop Savitar.Meanwhile, H.R. (Tom Cavanagh) continues to push Tracy Brand (guest star Anne Dudek) to design the trap for Savitar and Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) returns with an interesting proposal.
David McWhirter directed the episode written by Judalina Neira & Lauren Certo.
