Both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have proven to be quite excellent on the market, even though Sony has a substantial lead over Microsoft's console with more units sold. That said, Electronic Arts doesn't believe their momentum is going to slow down anytime soon, even with new hardware like PlayStation 4 Pro and Project Scorpio on the market.

During the publisher's quarterly investor conference call earlier this week, Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen noted that the company believes that there's room for growth with the current consoles on the market, and that more units will be sold by year's end.

Jorgensen estimates that sales of both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will continue to flourish, reaching 105 million units combined by the end of the year. That's a huge bump up from the estimate of 79 million units for the previous year.

It's kind of odd that the numbers didn't include the Nintendo Switch to some extent, but CEO Andrew Wilson noted that, although it's not included in the forecast due to the publisher not disclosing sales numbers, it will add to the count if they do end up being revealed.

As for PC gaming, Jorgensen noted that he expects to see a slight decline in the market this year, while mobile will increase a little bit with its plethora of free-to-play games.

Even though Microsoft and Sony will both be pushing their new hardware on the market later this year (in a battle to see who truly dominates the market), it appears that the PS4 and Xbox One will still be hot sellers, based around potential price drops and a library of hit games that work fine on both platforms, without the need to upgrade. On top of that, not everyone really has the money to purchase new hardware for their home – and the Project Scorpio could be quite costly, based on early estimates.

So, yeah, expect Xbox One and PlayStation 4 (and the Switch, in a way) to continue leading the market into the holiday season. It's just a matter of seeing who sells what to become the definitive sales leader.
