Famed Cut Content From PS1 Spider-Man Game Appears After Nearly 24 Years

Notorious cut content from the PS1 game Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro has finally emerged almost 24 years after the game was first released. Prior to Insomniac Games taking over Spider-Man in the world of gaming, some of the Webhead’s most popular adventures took place on the PS1. The most notable game to release on this platform was that of 2000’s Spider-Man from Activision, which is still looked back upon fondly by many today. Its sequel, 2001’s Enter Electro, wasn’t as well-received, but there was a pretty big reason why.

Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro ended up launching in October of 2001, but it was actually supposed to arrive earlier than this. The follow-up Spidey game was slated for September 18, 2001, but had to be retooled very late in its development. The reason for this is that Enter Electro originally culminated in a final boss fight that took place at the World Trade Center in New York City. Given that the Twin Towers were destroyed in the attacks on September 11th, Enter Electro had to go through some last-second changes to make this final stage more nondescript so that it wouldn’t be directly linked to the real-world locale.

Beyond this alteration, though, developer Vicarious Visions also removed an ending cutscene that featured the Marvel character Thor showing up and talking to Spider-Man after the final battle. While Thor was briefly referenced in the ending version of Enter Electro that shipped on PS1, the scene in which he actually appeared was removed entirely because it couldn’t be easily altered to remove the Twin Towers. Now, well over 20 years later, that footage is now what has finally hit the internet.

Thor Scene From Spider-Man 2 Finally Sees the Light of Day

As of this week, user BobbyFan85 uploaded the original ending from Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro to their Instagram account. The video, which you can find attached above, is only a little over a minute in length and is said to have been captured all the way back in October 2001. BobbyFan85 doesn’t explain how they were able to access this original, unedited version of Enter Electro, but they said the footage had been sitting on an old hard drive that they never got rid of.

While this might not seem like a big deal, it finally provides some closure on Enter Electro that many Spidey fans have wanted for over two decades. It’s understandable why this content was cut in the moment by Activision, but it always left Spider-Man 2 feeling a bit unfinished, especially when compared to its predecessor. Now, this scene can fill the gaps and allow fans to see the original vision that developer Vicarious Visions had for Enter Electro‘s conclusion, even if this video doesn’t drastically alter its ending all that much.
