The latest issue of the Injustice 2 comic, written by Tom Taylor, opens with a morbid and somewhat disturbing scene. In fact, Taylor himself refused to share a preview of the opening panels on social media due to the creepy and downright macabre nature of the event.

What the heck is going on, and how bad could it be that it gave Tom Taylor the creeps. This is the man who has made a name for himself by brutally murdering our favorite superheroes! A quick look at the opening panels reveals exactly what Taylor was referring to. It seems like a certain beloved Batman character gets brought back from the grave with a little help from the Lazarus Pit. Take a look:

As you can see, Alfred has been revived, but certainly not to his former glory. He appears in a decrepit, somewhat mummified state, and is clearly unable to walk or take care of himself. In that panel we see Damian kneeling down next to his one-time caretaker, and looking at him with sympathetic eyes. It’s a side of Damian we’re not used to seeing. His recently revealed sister Anathasia reminds him that the Lazarus pit doesn’t always work like we expect it to:

Remembering How Alfred Died

ย

Do you remember how Alfred died in the first place? It was a pretty disturbing affair, and like most murders in the Injustice universe, it all comes back to Superman. The caped tyrant was after information. At the time Alfred was Superman’s only key to the whereabouts of Batman, and Alfred would not give up his location. Instead of dealing with Alfred himself, Superman sends the sickest serial killer around to do his dirty work: Victor Zsasz.

Those of you familiar with Zsasz’s less than graceful approach will know that this encounter was going to end in death, either of Victor or of Alfred. After infiltrating the Bat Cave Zsasz ends up attacking Alfred and slicing his stomach open. Alfred predictably bleeds to death in a horrific manner, and it’s Damian who eventually finds his body.

What purpose will Alfred serve, and why was he revived in the first place? Was it a purely sentimental move, or is there something more, here? Perhaps leverage to use against Batman? We’ll see very soon.
