Mario Kart 8 Can (Fittingly) Now Be Played In 8K On The PC

Wii U emulation has come a long way in just a couple short years. In 2015 the most popular Wii U emulator, CEMU, could barely run Mario Kart 8 at all, and now it can run the game at 8K resolution. Mario Kart 8 in 8K – something appropriate about that!

You can check out an approximation of what Mario Kart 8 looks like in 8K in the video above, courtesy of YouTuber Will. The footage has been sampled down to 4K, since an 8K YouTube video would kill most people's internet connections, but the game still looks pretty damn impressive. Sure, the ultra-high resolution exposes a few of Mario Kart 8's rough edges, but the game holds up surprisingly well. It helps that CEMU comes with features that improve Wii U games' textures, lighting, anti-aliasing, and more.

Of course, you're going to need a pretty beastly rig to play Mario Kart 8 in 8K. Running Mario Kart 8, the CEMU emulator, and outputting an 8K image all at once is no easy task – our YouTuber is rocking an Intel i7-6700k processor with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card, and likely a ton of RAM.

CEMU recently released a new update, which added several new features and better support for games like Bayonetta 2 and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. The general improvements include a new profile system, controller configuration UI, and improved gyro controls. If you want to grab the latest version of CEMU, you can do that right here – just know that doing so will make Nintendo very disappointed in you.

Or maybe you just want to play the latest Mario Kart without messing around with emulation? Well then, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is currently available for Nintendo Switch.
