A Pokemon Go player has compiled a list of Pokemon spanning all generations in hopes of finding out which options are the most powerful, ranked by Type.

Amid all the catchable Pokemon in Pokemon Go, players are constantly on the hunt for the best options to round out their team when it comes to defending and taking down gyms. With the recent introduction of Legendary Pokemon into Pokemon Go, players are back at the search with a new fervor, and they’re already looking forward to future Pokemon and Legendaries.
Revisiting a previous posting when Redditor msnf gave his take on which Pokemon would be the strongest across generations, the Pokemon Go data-speculator has created an updated list. These charts now include Legendaries, and the data is based on the formula Pokemon Go uses where they convert stats from handheld Pokemon games into the mobile game.
Bug / Dark Pokemon
With a list organized by Redditor msnf that’s alphabetical by Type, the first two Pokemon Types that the charts rank are Bug and Dark Pokemon.
Some of the Pokemon from the lists, such as the Bug-Type Volcarona, still find their way onto the charts, but the top spot for Bug Pokemon now goes to Buzzwole, a Bug/Fighting hybrid that was introduced as an Ultra Beast in Pokemon Sun and Moon.
Yveltal is the first Legendary Pokemon to make the list, topping the charts with whopping CP of 4,379 when compared to other Dark Pokemon. The pseudo-Legendary Hydreigon also finds itself on the list albeit at a much lower CP level than the No. 1 Yveltal.
Dragon / Electric Pokemon
Next up are the Dragon and Electric Pokemon Types, two lists that actually add some Legendary Pokemon to the charts along with some classic Pokemon favorites from all the way back to Generation I.
The No. 1 spot held by the Dragon Pokemon once again features a Legendary Pokemon, a powerful Dragon / Fire Type called Reshiram that was available beginning in Generation V with Pokemon Black and White. Dragonite is one of only two Pokemon that made the list that aren’t Legendaries, the other being the pseudo-Legendary Garchomp, but the fact that the two appear on the charts among such powerful Pokemon points to their usefulness.
Zekrom tops the Electric charts, signifying a trend of Legendary Pokemon being pretty dominant. Gen I names such as Jolteon and Zapdos still appear on the list, so keep them if you’ve got them!
Fairy / Fighting Pokemon
The Fairy and Fighting Pokemon Types couldn’t be more opposite in combat styles, but they still both have some pretty impressive Pokemon topping the list in a mix of Legendaries and more typical Pokemon.
Xerneas reigns supreme when looking at the Fairy Types as a Legendary with both the highest CP and Attack stat at 4,379 and 275, respectively. Other quickly-recognizable Pokemon on the list include Togekiss, Sylveon, and Gardevoir.
But as far as the Fighting Types go, the top Pokemon from that list is actually one that came in at No. 1 on another. Buzzwole proves to supposedly be the best option when looking for either a Fighting or a Bug Type.
Fire / Flying Pokemon
Fire Pokemon provide unique advantages against certain Types in both Pokemon Go and other, more traditional Pokemon games, and the rankings for that Type reveals that future Pokemon will still be plenty powerful. Flying Pokemon have all kinds of room for Legendaries to be included in the rankings, so it’s no surprise that their chart is filled with the rare Pokemon.
Another returning powerhouse, Reshiram tops both the Fire and the Dragon charts with some impressive CP and Attack stats. Several other Legendaries including Moltres and Ho-Oh also find themselves listed.
Crossing over from Fire to Flying, Ho-Oh is expected to be the strongest airborne Pokemon. It’s worth noting that two of the Pokemon from the original Legendary Bird trio find their way onto the Flying, Articuno being the only one that doesn’t make an appearance.
Ghost / Grass Pokemon
Those on the Ghost and Grass Type charts will be pretty recognizable for those who have stuck with the Pokemon games for a while since they span multiple generations to bring together the strongest Pokemon from each Type.
The Ghost Pokemon chart sticks to the Legendary theme with Lunala being the most powerful with a huge 4,791 CP. Gengar also finds his ghostly way into the list at the No. 8 spot, a welcome addition to the Pokemon list despite him being ranked lower.
Grass Pokemon, however, break the Legendary mold with Kartana, an Ultra Beast, with 355 Attack, a stat that’s pretty far ahead of the No. 2 Tapa Bulu.
Ground / Ice Pokemon
Regarding the list of Ground and Ice Pokemon, two Types that again are pretty opposite in their effects and advantages, several of the Pokemon listed are also seen on other rankings.
With the highest CP up to this point on all the charts, Groudon has a crazy-high power level of 4,874 CP, a number that’ll make fans of Pokemon Ruby quite happy. Garchomp is also listed along with the Generation I Pokemon Rhydon that’s already catchable.
Kyurem is another Legendary that tops the Ice charts, one that was also seen within the Dragon rankings. More Legendaries like Articuno and Regice are also included with more basic Pokemon like the Eevee evolution Glaceon.
Normal / Poison Pokemon
Normal and Poison Pokemon are the next ones that are ranked, but keeping up with Pokemon Go‘s current problems involving the Poison Type, those Pokemon leave something to be desired.
Groudon’s top-CP title didn’t last very long with the Normal Pokemon list coming next, the No. 1 spot going to the lazy Slaking with a massive 5,441 CP. While the stats are certainly high, Slaking has some pretty obvious trade-offs in the traditional games, to it’ll be interesting to see how the Pokemon is balanced for Pokemon Go.
Nihilego ranks as the top Poison Pokemon with a CP of 4,128, a level that’s still somewhat low compared to other Types. Toxic-users will know that part of the issue with Poison Types in Pokemon Go come from the lack of status effects, a defining characteristic that’s definitely holding them back.
Psychic / Rock Pokemon
Psychic Pokemon are known for their mind-based attacks and Ground Pokemon that have proven to be invaluable against the Flying Legendaries are listed next, Pokemon that again include old favorites and known powerhouses.
The primarily-Psychic Type Lunala tops the Psychic charts much like it did on the list of Ghost Pokemon, but some Pokemon that are much nearer in their release also make the rankings. Mewtwo is sure to be released soon, and as the No. 3 Psychic Type, it’ll definitely be worth grabbing.
Just like the previously-listed Poison Pokemon, Nihilego is the top Rock Pokemon as well. Others include Rhydon again and the ever-popular Tyranitar, so if you’ve got those on your team already, make sure you hang onto them.
Steel / Water Pokemon
Last but not least in the Pokemon Type rankings across generations are Steel and Water Pokemon, and while they don’t boast the highest CP levels among the charts, they’re still pretty impressive.
The lion-looking Psychic/Steel Pokemon Solgaleo is No. 1 as far as Steel Pokemon go, but you’ll also find other Legendary Pokemon like Dialga and Jirachi among the rankings.
Like Groudon, fans of Pokemon Sapphire will be pleased to see that Kyogre is the best Water Type Pokemon that Pokemon Go players can hope for. It should be no surprise that Vaporeon is also on the list, an Eevee evolution that’s been a strong gym defender since the beginning.
