Sony has announced that it will soon be pushing out a new update to all PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles that will come with a pretty major upgrade to DualSense controllers. Typically in the Fall, Sony releases some more sizable PS5 console patches that come with larger overhauls than normal for the hardware. And while Fall hasn’t rolled around just yet, a new patch for PlayStation platforms is set to go live soon that could pave the way for an even larger firmware update in the weeks ahead.

Set to release on September 17th, this new PS5 console update will notably add DualSense controller pairing as a feature that users can take advantage of. Controller pairing on PS5 is something that went into beta back in July and has since been in the testing phase. Now, Sony is finally ready to release this upgrade to the PS5 to all PlayStation users around the globe, which will in turn make the DualSense better than ever.
What Does PS5 Controller Pairing Do?

If you’re not familiar with what controller pairing is, it’s essentially the function that allows PS5 DualSense controllers to be logged to different devices other than the PS5 itself. While DualSense controllers are mainly meant to be used with PS5 hardware, they’re also compatible with PCs and mobile devices. Until this point, though, the controllers could only be paired to a single device at a time and would have to be manually synced to a new platform each time upon use. Now, this will be a thing of the past.
In the wake of this update, DualSense controllers will now be able to pair to four different devices at once. This means you could seamlessly use the same controller to bounce between a PS5 console, a PC, or a mobile phone/tablet and not have to restart the syncing process each time. This feature is something that many PlayStation owners might not ever take advantage of, but it’s also one that has been highly requested by a small group for quite some time.
This Isn’t the Only PS5 Improvement
Outside of bringing about this functionality, PlayStation is also adding a new power-saving function to PS5 platforms with this patch. Toggleable in the settings menu, this “Power Saver” option will reduce the power consumed by select games that are played on the console. Sony has only identified games that include Death Stranding 2, Demon’s Souls, and Ghost of Yotei as some of the games that will be compatible with Power Saver so far, with others set to be added in the future.
