Back in 2015 Nintendo finally gave fans the keys to the kingdom with Super Mario Maker, which was great, but what if you wanted to create your own diabolical 3D stages? Super Mario Maker is strictly a 2D affair, and Nintendo has remained mum about the possibility of a 3D version of the level editor.

Well, thankfully prolific Super Mario 64 modder Kaze Emanuar has done what Nintendon’t, creating an intuitive level editor for the game. Super Mario 64 Maker lets you place items, change their size and dimensions, and test out your stages. Once your satisfied with your devilish creation, you can then save it as a file you can share online! Sure, Super Mario 64 Maker isn’t as slick or charming as Nintendo’s official 2D level editor, but it actually looks like it works pretty well, which is impressive, because Emanuar apparently tossed it together in a week.
“I’ve streamed myself working on [Super Mario 64 Maker] about 2 hours every day live on Twitch. I often get comments that say that I’m rather fast at coding with these rom hacks.”
No kidding. If you run across a clever Mario 64 rom hack, chances are very good its Emanuar’s work, as he’s created a wide variety of mods, including the Super Mario Odyssey 64 mashup we recently shared. His main project is Super Mario 64: Last Impact, a major expansion for the classic game that adds 130 additional stars and a ton of new levels and power-ups.
You can download the Super Mario 64 Maker mod here, and submit your original levels, right here.
And hey, if you want to keep it 2D, Super Mario Maker is currently available on Wii U and 3DS.
