Super Mario Odyssey May Have Some Form Of Online Mode

Earlier this month we reported that Super Mario Odyssey had been assessed by the Australian Classification Board, and given a slightly harsher rating than many were expecting – a PG. Since then, the board has stepped in to explain their rating and, in the process, revealed another Super Mario Odyssey surprise.

According to the Aussie Classification Board, the PG rating was actually Nintendo’s suggestion:

“This game was submitted to the Classification Board by Nintendo under the computer games assessor scheme. The Classification Board considers [publisher recommendations] to make classification decisions. Nintendo recommended [Super Mario Odyssey] be classified PG with consumer advice of ‘mild themes and violence, online interactivity.’ The Classification Board agreed with the PG classification, but decided that the more appropriate consumer advice would be ‘mild violence, online interactivity.’”

Did you catch that? According to Nintendo themselves, Super Mario Odyssey will have some sort of online interactivity. That’s certainly not something you’re used to seeing in a Mario platformer – what kind of online features could Nintendo be planning?

We know Super Mario Odyssey will feature co-op, with one player controlling Mario’s hat, but that’s strictly a same-couch kind of thing. Could Odyssey have some sort of competitive minigames? Or maybe the game will have Miiverse-like features? The Nintendo Switch doesn’t support Miiverse, but the recently-released Splatoon 2 does allow players to leave messages and doodles for other players to see. It’s hard to say for sure – given how off-the-wall the rest of Super Mario Odyssey is, the game could be using the Internet for some sort of completely new (and completely wacky) purpose. Personally though, my money’s on the Miiverse-style messages.

Super Mario Odyssey leaps onto Nintendo Switch owners on October 27.
